5 DIY Valentine’s Day Home Decorations To Do With The Kids

January 20, 2021 by Julie Leave a Comment

How do you make Valentine’s Day special for kids? You might start by looking for valentine’s art and craft ideas for preschoolers and diy valentines decorations. Here’s a post with some great Valentine’s Day decoration ideas you can make for your kids or even with them as a craft project!

Not to alarm you or anything, but do you realize Valentine’s Day is just around the corner? No, really. I checked.

When you have kids, Valentine’s Day is far less stressful. When you’re single, you might ignore this day or celebrate with friends. But now you’re working on making special memories for the little ones, whether you have a significant other or not, so you get to focus on their happy, shining faces. (But please, don’t forget your significant other, if you have one. Trust me.)

But back to—Valentine’s Day!  Where we celebrate all things love related. Like the Beatles said, “All you need is love.” But to quote the great Charles M. Schulz, “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”

With that thought in our minds, let’s take a look at some fun Valentine’s DIY projects and DIY Valentines decorations.

And bring on the chocolate!

Valentine’s Day Decorations and Crafts for Kids

These fun valentines day decorations DIY ideas will be a great activity for you and your children.

1. Balloons

If the children are really little, don’t do balloons. A popped balloon is a dangerous menace. But if the children aren’t at the “I must put that in my mouth” age, then nothing else quite makes a statement for so little moolah than a bunch of balloons.

Here’s the DIY part: After you blow the balloons up, you can mod podge on red and pink cut-out tissue hearts. So it doesn’t get too messy looking, keep the hearts simple. One big dark pink or red heart per balloon, the balloon preferably in white or pale pink colors.

Alternately, you can buy Valentine’s stickers and cover balloons with hearts, cupids, or smooches of your choice.

If they’re full of helium, ribbons hanging down from the tie look fabulous and also keeps balloons from going airborne.

2. Candles

Speaking of stickers, these fat gold hearts would be adorable stuck on a dozen clear votive candle holders. Spread them on a mantle or down a dining room table.

Instead, you could choose to tie them with red ribbons or glue lace on the outside for a soft glow. Whatever you decide, though, use those small LED tealights—fire and children just don’t belong together.

3. Heart Suckers

Now a few heart suckers spread around won’t do much to stand out. Combine them with some beautiful terracotta pots, though, and you’re in business.

Plant some small, inexpensive white flowering plants in a trio of small pots and then stick in some unwrapped heart-shaped suckers. Children will love that the hearts seem to have grown alongside the flowers.

4. Baby’s Breath

I’ve been to some weddings lately, where big, beautiful bunches of baby’s breath were used for the bridesmaids’ bouquets and to decorate the reception hall. Not only was the effect surprisingly stunning, but I imagine the cost was much lower than traditional bouquets.

You can steal this idea and create an impressive look for the big day. If you have matching vases, a duo of blossoming flowers on an entryway table would be lovely. You can also spray paint baby’s breath in pink or red, and even make an inexpensive wreath like this one.

5. The Children

Finally, decorate the children. This will be your kids’ favorite part! A heart face painting goes far, and kids tend to love it. Spray a little red glitter in their hair and voilå! They’re all ready for the day.

For extra fun, buy them some extra cute Valentine-themed tops for children from The Spunky Stork. These clever sayings on the shirt are so fun and your kids can wear them again and again and again, even AFTER Valentine’s Day is over.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
