Using Golf to Unwind: Stress Relief for Busy Working Moms

April 14, 2025 by Julie Leave a Comment

As working moms, we constantly juggle a million responsibilities. From board meetings to soccer practice, grocery shopping to bedtime stories, our days are jam-packed with barely a moment to breathe. And let’s be honest—in the hierarchy of family needs, our own self-care often falls to the bottom of the list.

But what if there was an activity that could help you reclaim some precious me-time while also reducing stress, improving your health, and even strengthening family bonds? Enter golf: the unexpected sanctuary for busy working moms everywhere.

Why Golf is Perfect for Busy Working Moms

When you think of stress relief, your mind might jump to bubble baths or meditation apps. But golf offers a unique combination of mental focus, physical activity, and social connection that makes it surprisingly perfect for busy moms looking to decompress.

Studies have shown that the combination of light physical activity, focus, and being outdoors can reduce cortisol levels by up to 60%—which explains that blissful feeling you get after a good round! Regular golfers report better sleep quality and easier emotional regulation—a skill that translates beautifully to handling toddler tantrums or teenage drama.

Perhaps most importantly, golf creates a clear boundary between your various roles. For a few hours, you’re not just “mom” or an employee—you’re a golfer focused on your game. This mental break from responsibility helps you break the stress cycle that keeps so many of us running on empty.

Time In Nature

One of golf’s greatest gifts is the time it gives you outdoors. Research consistently shows that spending time in green spaces reduces mental fatigue, lowers blood pressure, and decreases anxiety levels.

Unlike being cooped up in an office or overwhelmed at home, the golf course offers a peaceful environment where your mind can finally relax. The simple act of breathing fresh air while surrounded by trees, water features, and open spaces triggers your body’s natural relaxation response.

Mindful Focus

In today’s world of constant notifications and endless to-do lists, our attention is pulled in a dozen directions at once. Whether it’s a full round on the green or a fun game through searching a local mini golf by using Putt Putt Spot, golf is the perfect antidote to this mental chaos. You simply can’t be thinking about tomorrow’s meeting or the mountain of laundry waiting at home when you’re prepping for a shot.

This present-moment awareness is mindfulness in disguise. Each swing requires your complete attention, forcing those racing thoughts to quiet down. You’re focused only on your body position, the club in your hands, and the ball—nothing else.

Physical Without Exhaustion

Let’s be real—most working moms don’t have the energy for high-intensity workouts after a long day. The beauty of golf is that it provides genuine physical activity without leaving you completely drained. Walking an 18-hole course can burn up to 2,000 calories and clock 5 to 7 miles, but it’s spread over a few hours at a comfortable pace.

This gentle exercise increases your heart rate just enough to boost energy levels and release feel-good endorphins without the exhaustion of more intense workouts. You’ll return home feeling refreshed and energized rather than depleted—ready to engage with your family instead of collapsing on the couch.

Making Golf Work with a Busy Mom Schedule

I know what you’re thinking: “This sounds great, but when would I possibly have time?” The key is starting small and being strategic about how you incorporate golf into your schedule.

Start Small

You don’t have to jump straight into 18-hole rounds three times a week! Begin with short sessions at the driving range or putting green. Just hitting a bucket of balls or practicing your putt can clear your mind and give you that mental reset you need.

Many golf facilities offer these practice areas with no tee time required, making it easy to fit in a quick 30-minute session during lunch, while the kids are at practice, or even on your way home from work.

Early Bird Options

For many working moms, the early morning hours offer a rare pocket of uninterrupted time. Consider booking the first tee time of the day—often as early as 6 or 7 am, depending on the season.

Early morning golf has another advantage: faster play. With fewer golfers on the course, you’ll move through your round more quickly, making it even more time-efficient.

Nine-Hole Play

Nine-hole rounds are perfect for busy schedules. You can complete nine holes in about two hours—roughly the same time as a movie or lunch with friends. Many courses now offer specific nine-hole rates and tee times.

This “golf light” option gives you all the benefits with half the time commitment—perfect for fitting in between your daughter’s soccer game and family dinner.

Choose Your Course Carefully

Look for courses that offer family-friendly amenities like flexible cancellation policies (because we all know kids get sick at the most inconvenient times), practice facilities where children can join you, and perhaps even childcare options.

Some forward-thinking clubs have created special “mom-friendly” memberships with perks like reserved tee times during school hours, childcare during women’s leagues, and family activities. Don’t be afraid to ask about these options!

Use Tech to Your Advantage

Technology can be a working mom’s best friend when it comes to improving your golf game without spending countless hours practicing. Apps like V1 Golf allow you to record your swing and receive professional feedback, all from your home.

Virtual golf simulators are another fantastic option for busy moms, especially during bad weather or winter months. Many indoor facilities offer hourly rentals where you can practice your swing regardless of outdoor conditions. For a double-whammy, schedule some simulator sessions with friends!

Getting the Kids Involved

Golf can be an inclusive family activity, unlike many sports that separate parents from children. Family tee times may come with child discounts, making it more affordable. Start with a few holes, bring snacks, and emphasize fun over technique to teach kids patience and etiquette while enjoying nature together.

Consider parallel junior and adult lessons so everyone improves together—you get personal development time while your children engage in positive activity. Parent-child tournaments, designed to accommodate varying skill levels, can create lasting bonding experiences even for beginners.

The golf course also provides valuable teaching moments as children observe your persistence and improvement, absorbing lessons about determination and the importance of self-care. And when course visits aren’t possible, backyard putting contests or mini-golf trips maintain a family connection to the sport while providing casual fun.

Using Golf to Unwind: Stress Relief for Busy Working Moms

Conclusion

Finding time for yourself as a working mom isn’t selfish—it’s a must! Golf offers a unique combination of stress relief, physical activity, social connection, and family bonding that few other activities can match. Whether you’re seeking solitude on an early morning round or creating new family traditions on the course, golf can be adapted to fit your unique needs and schedule.

The journey begins with giving yourself permission to prioritize this time. Schedule it, protect it, and most importantly, enjoy it without guilt. The happier and more centered you become through golf, the more fully you can show up in all the other areas of your life. So grab those clubs, mom—the course is calling! Your mind, body, and family will thank you for it.
