Taking Care of Your Child’s Teeth While They Have Braces

February 28, 2024 by Julie Leave a Comment

When your child undergoes orthodontic treatment with dental braces, it’s crucial to prioritize their oral hygiene to avoid potential dental issues. Wearing braces is like being a superhero training for a dazzling smile! But just like any hero, your child needs the right tools and care to conquer obstacles and achieve their mission. Let’s explore how to tackle oral hygiene during this exciting journey!

Why is Oral Hygiene Super Important with Braces?

Imagine your child’s teeth are the base of their awesome superhero smile! But braces can act like tiny traps for bad guys like food bits and plaque. That’s why brushing and flossing extra carefully are super important! If we don’t fight those villains, they can cause sore gums and holes in the teeth, which means waiting longer for that amazing smile to shine through!

Brushing: Your Child’s Secret Weapon!

Brush after every meal (even snacks!) – it’s like training! Aim for 4 times a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush (replaced often). Angle the brush to clean under wires and around brackets, brushing carefully for 2 minutes (think superhero montage!). Don’t forget the roof of the mouth and tongue!

Steps to follow while brushing

Step 1: Elastics Off!

If your kiddo has those stretchy friends called elastics, it’s time for them to take a break!

Step 2: Angle Attack!

Hold the brush like a superhero sword at a 45-degree angle where their gums meet their teeth. Aim upwards on the bottom teeth and downwards on the top, just like a tiny cleaning robot!

Step 3: Bracet Bashing!

Give each tooth some individual love with gentle back-and-forth brush strokes. Don’t forget to brush around each “bracet buddy” on both the top and bottom, and give the wire a good scrub too!

Step 4: Rinse and Repeat!

Blast away any loose food villains with a good rinse. Make sure you check every corner – gums, braces, and all teeth – to get rid of any sneaky leftover snacks!

Step 5: Elastics Back On!

If your child needs those elastics again, it’s time to put them back on duty!

Remember: This is like a superhero training session for their smile! Take your time and do it right so their braces stay happy and healthy.

Flossing: Mastering the Obstacle Course!

Flossing consumes time with braces. But it’s still a super important part of keeping the braces squeaky clean!

For floss ninjas, a floss threader is like a tiny secret weapon. It looks like a needle (but don’t worry, it doesn’t poke!), and helps thread the floss under the tricky brace wires.

If flossing feels tough, thin [easyazon_link identifier=”B0B2Z2PV8H” locale=”US” tag=”chapbrea05-20″]interdental brushes[/easyazon_link] are another option. They’re like tiny tooth-sized brooms that sweep away plaque between the teeth.

Your friendly orthodontist is here to help! They can show you how to floss with braces, recommend the best tools, and even give you some samples to try. Remember, happy braces mean a happy smile!

Food Choices: Fueling the Smile Mission!

Sticky and hard foods are the villains in this story! Opt for soft foods like yogurt and mashed potatoes, and say no to sugary treats and hard candies. Remember, healthy snacks like fruits and veggies (cut smaller if needed) are your child’s superhero fuel!

Rubber Bands: Teamwork Makes the Smile Dream Work!

Wearing rubber bands as instructed by your orthodontist is like having a helpful sidekick! They work together with braces to align teeth faster, potentially shortening treatment time. Remember to wear them 24/7 (except when brushing and eating). Teamwork makes the smile dream work!

Prioritize mouthguard during sports!

Playing games like football, basketball, or soccer can be risky for your kid’s braces! Bumping balls or flying hands could accidentally hit their face and ouch, damage their braces or gums! Even worse, their braces might give their lips a nasty surprise!

But there’s a superhero in disguise! Wearing a mouthguard is like putting a shield on their smile. It helps protect their mouth and braces, even if they don’t love it. Think of it this way: a mouthguard is way cooler than a bloody lip or a broken bracket, right?

Remember:

  • Regular orthodontic checkups are key.
  • Be patient, a beautiful smile takes time and effort!
  • Celebrate milestones and challenges overcome! Make it a fun, rewarding experience for your child.

Together, you’ve got this! Let’s embark on this exciting braces adventure and achieve a smile that shines!
