Side-Hustle Series: Interview with My Effing Coffee

November 24, 2020 by Julie 1 Comment

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe and join the tribe. Thanks for visiting!

I am enjoying interviewing professionals and mom bosses about their line of work or their side hustles. Today I am sharing an interview with Cat of Effing Mom powered by My Effing Coffee.

Tell us about yourself and My Effing Coffee.
My name is Cat and I am a 30-something mom of two young girls, living in Montana USA. I work in the Digital Skills Industry and am the Founder and Owner of Effing Mom – a parenting brand powered by My Effing Coffee. My Effing Coffee is a curator and supplier of high quality, ethically sourced coffee variants. We do some pretty cool coffee machines and merchandise too.

I might be a little biased but My Effing Coffee is damn fine AND awesome! 10% of all first orders with WELCOME20

What inspired you to launch a coffee business?
I have quite a dark sense of humor and when I started Effing Mom, it was simply a social space to share the trials and tribulations parenting presents you. Much like many moms, my day is powered by coffee but more than that, being fully immersed in all things coffee can be a really divine olfactory experience. Coffee is so much more than just a caffeine boost and one day I realized that I could take something I am passionate about and, not only monetize it, but share it with people across the world in a fun way. I am pretty sure MANY parents have had the thought when someone reaches for their coffee cup “hey! That’s my effing coffee!”

We all know that coffee is vital for busy moms. What makes My Effing Coffee unique?
My Effing Coffee is not only ethically sourced and produced, but all of our flavored coffees start as specialty grade single-origin coffee roasted in small batches to a smooth medium. Each order is then carefully flavored with high-quality flavoring oils, while still warm. Our roasts are available in 12oz, 1lb, 2lb, 5lb, and 12lb bags in the option of espresso or regular grind. We also ship worldwide.

Which flavors are your favorite?
Personally, I like a stronger coffee and so African Espresso is probably my best, but Cowboy Blend with both dark and medium roasted coffee beans has lovely cocoa, caramel, and vanilla tones.

What are some of your favorite things about running your business?
As I mentioned, I have a pretty dark sense of humor and so my favorite thing has to be how many of my customers tag me in funny posts on social media, only adding to my daily smiles. I also run my business with IMMENSE gratitude for how fortunate I am to be in a state of growth when the world has been in a state of turmoil.

What are some challenges you ran into when starting your business?
Starting the actual business was not the hard part. I had a brand, I had a target market and I had passion. The hardest part is growing your business outside of your personal network and that comes with patience, a LOT of learning, and trial and error. It’s a fairly specific personality that appreciates the “Effing” brands.

Any advice you want to give fellow moms?
Nothing is impossible. Often things like money or time scare us from starting a business or following our dreams. But in today’s day and age, there is so much training and knowledge available for free that anyone could do it. The key is not expecting or thinking it will be an overnight success. I know the hard work and effort I put into starting this business will one day pay for my girls’ college funds and (hopefully) a pretty awesome pension pot for me too.
