I am enjoying interviewing professionals and mom bosses about their line of work or their side hustles. Today I am sharing an interview with Kids’ Cake Boxes.
Tell us about yourself and Kids’ Cake Boxes
I’m Karen. A mom to three amazing babes – ages 9, 6, and 2. Kids’ Cake Boxes was founded for all kids just like them – the kids that miss being together with friends and family during this time of social distancing or any time they need to be apart from those close to them. At its heart, Kid’s Cake Boxes is for virtual birthday parties and makes every guest feel included in the celebration by providing birthday cake to everyone. But beyond that, Kids’ Cake Boxes can be used for all sorts of virtual gatherings, such as gender reveal parties, team building, keeping holiday baking traditions alive, play dates, birthdays for “kids” of all ages, and any time when you want to connect and celebrate with someone who can’t be right there, right then.
What inspired you to launch Kids’ Cake Boxes
Kids. My kids. Your kids. All kids. When we shut down due to Covid, the sudden isolation affected my kids quite significantly. My middle child, who is so very social, took it particularly hard and became really sad. As the months ticked by, I talked to other parents who also expressed their concern and sadness for their own children as they, too, experienced higher emotions and sadder days not being able to be with their friends, cousins, neighbors. I wanted to help the kids be happier. I wanted them to continue to look forward to important days, like their birthday, and continue to make happy memories.

What makes Kids’ Cake Boxes unique?
Kids’ Cake Boxes is unique in that it sends a personal-sized cake making kit to every guest at the virtual party. Each child then bakes their own tiny cake, brings it to the virtual party, and frosts and decorates it with their friends. Then, when the birthday child blows out the candle on the other side of the screen, every guest gets to enjoy birthday cake together, just like they used to when we all attended parties in person.
How does Kids’ Cake Boxes help reduce the mental load of motherhood?
Oh man. Motherhood is definitely not meant to be done alone and it’s so important to recognize that no matter your situation, you are never alone on this journey.
Kids’ Cake Boxes helps the mental load of motherhood by keeping kids connected to their friends – that vital support network that all people need. It makes kids happy. It can be used for birthdays and all celebrations during this time of social distancing, but beyond that, Kids’ Cake Boxes continues to keep friends connected to those who no longer live nearby or who cannot travel for a celebration. Being a military family, we are quite familiar with leaving friends behind when we move and my heart is lifted that we can now include those friends from our old home in our parties at our new home. Plus, Kids’ Cake Boxes can be sent to grandmas and uncles and cousins and all those who simply can’t make it to the party, but with whom we want to celebrate. Kids’ Cake Boxes helps with the mother’s mental load by helping with their kids’ mental load.
Which flavors/colors/varieties are your favorite?
If I had to choose one, I’d go with vanilla cake, chocolate frosting, and yellow sprinkles. There’s a bunch to choose from at kidscakeboxes.com

Well, Kids’ Cake Boxes just went live in October, so I’m still in that “starting” phase. So far, however, the biggest challenge has been spreading the word and I thank you for allowing me this opportunity to reach out here on this platform.
What does it take for someone to get started with their own side hustle in your line of work?
Passion. Only do it if you truly believe in it and if it makes you happy inside.
