I am enjoying interviewing professionals about their line of work or their side hustles. Today I am sharing an interview with social media marketer Amanda, who runs Magnolia Marketing Group.
Tell us a little about yourself and your business. Why did you select it and how did you get started?
My main business is Magnolia Marketing Group- my Social Media Marketing Firm. I started about 18 months ago, by handling the social media marketing for my husband’s recruiting firm. So many of his small business and consulting colleagues noticed the strides we were making in social media marketing and wanted to know who they were using! My husband referred them to me, and now I am up to 9 clients and counting! I started my personal blog, Goat & Lulu, about 6 years ago, when my oldest child was 2. First, it was just a way of sharing my stay at home mom stories, and now it is a creative outlet for sharing our stories, but also my love of style, sewing, cooking, DIY, and motherhood.
Describe what you do and what you sell for those of us not familiar with your line of work or product.
With MMG, I design and manage small business’ social media marketing strategies. We work collaboratively to create a strategy that will achieve business goals and objectives within their marketing plans. I personalize my services to each individual client and work with them directly to their satisfaction.
What are some of your favorite things about what you do?
Working with other small business owners and entrepreneurs, making social media marketing less daunting, and being able to take some work off their plates and allow them to focus on their strengths as small business owners.
What are some challenges of this business?
Time management (I have three small children!), constantly changing technology, and the round-the-clock nature of the job.
For someone interested in what you do, can you share what to expect as far as earning potential and effort?
It takes a lot of work and a lot of scaling, but with a lot of flexibility, so many social media tools, and very little overhead, you can really make good money.
What does it take for someone to get started with their own side hustle in your line of work?
A very thorough understanding of social media (no “I’m on Facebook, so I know all about social”) and a computer and great wi-fi! You can really do it from anywhere, which is a bonus, and it takes open-mindedness to be willing to try new things and quickly adapt to new tools and technologies.
Anything else you would like to tell us about your business?
It’s great for a stay at home mom since you can work from your computer just about anywhere, and it can develop into a serious, self-sustainable business, or you can just work with a few clients. It’s fun and a necessary part of business these days.
