Side-Hustle Series: Interview with Black Streak Kitchen (Cook with Comics) Family Cooking Classes

March 20, 2018 by Julie Leave a Comment

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe and join fellow working moms. Thanks for visiting!

I am enjoying interviewing professionals and entrepreneurs about their line of work or their side hustles. Today I am sharing an interview with Black Streak Entertainment.

Side-Hustle Series: Interview with Black Streak Kitchen Cook with Comics Family Cooking Classes

Tell us a little about yourself and your business. Why did you select it and how did you get started?

We are Terry and Justin Raimey and we run Black Streak Entertainment. We’ve always been fans of comics and animation, so we decided to start our own brand within that space. As kids growing up in the 90’s we wrote our own stories, created characters, and drew our own comics, so establishing Black Streak as adults has allowed us to take our passion to the next level.

Describe what you do and what you sell for those of us not familiar with your line of work or product.

Our latest product is Black Streak Kitchen. We teach cooking, nutrition, health and wellness with recipes in the form of comics. We offer our comic cookbooks as digital comics and as video comic cooking classes. Our goal is to inspire kids and families to get in the kitchen, cook delicious and diverse recipes from around the world, and sit together at the dinner table as a family to enjoy a great meal, while making the experience fun and easy, no matter what your cooking experience level.

Visit Cook With Comics to get your free introductory comic cookbook and cooking class. All you’ll need to start is to sign up with your name and email. We’ll even give you exclusive comic cookbook and cooking class offers and discounts to take advantage of once you sign up.

What are some of your favorite things about what you do?

We love the creative process that goes into the comics and classes. Cooking and testing recipes, creating the character chefs featured in the comics, writing the scripts for the comics, filming and editing the video comic classes – it’s all so fulfilling. Seeing people’s reactions and excitement when we show them Black Streak Kitchen is always fun as well. It gives us the drive we need to keep pushing forward and introduce people to this new way of teaching cooking that we’ve developed.

What are some challenges of this business?

What we’re doing is a totally new concept that we’ve created, so it can be difficult to market. Having the support of passionate influencers who share our comics and classes with their audience helps in a major way. Influencers help build trust between the consumer and our brand.

For someone interested in what you do, can you share what to expect as far as earning potential and effort?

I once heard from a successful entrepreneur that if you’re only in business to get rich, you’ll never be successful. We push hard with Black Streak Kitchen because we believe in the brand we are building, and it’s a process. It’s just like our dad always tells us, “Nothing worth getting in life is easy.” So, with that said, we’ve both sacrificed a lot to get our comic cookbooks and classes produced, and even more to find our audience and market it. We’ve put more into Black Streak Kitchen than it has given back to us, but we love what we are doing and will continue to learn, grow and apply the knowledge we attain until we reach our business goals.

What does it take for someone to get started with their own side hustle in your line of work?

An idea, and the drive and resources to make that idea into a reality. Some people are fortunate enough to hit it rich the moment they put a product out there. That’s very rare though, so expect to invest a lot of money and time into your side hustle.

Anything else you would like to tell us about your business?

We’d love to have everyone reading this visit Cook with Comics and sign up to get their first Black Streak Kitchen Comics cookbook and cooking class for free! We are building a community of comic book cooks who are discovering the fun of cooking and eating together as a family through comics and animation, and we want you to be a part of our community.
