One of the most important duties we have as a parent is to teach our kids how to be responsible adults. This is where the practice of daily chores for kids comes into play. So why are household chores important for kids?

The earlier our kids learn skills that can help them grow into well-rounded and well-adjusted people, the better. In this article, I want to share the importance of household chores for kids and why parents should start assigning chores to children.

do your kids do chores - here's why they should

Why Household Chores are Important for Your Children

Let’s start with some consequences for not doing chores. Not having chores can lead to entitlement issues, where the child expects things to be done for them and has no concept of doing our share. But understanding how the home runs and having every member of the household participate in chores and helping the house run smoothly, well that teaches valuable lessons.

Most child and family experts believe that requiring your children to do chores is beneficial to both of you, as long as tasks are age-appropriate and not too physically challenging.

Here are some examples of age-appropriate chores for toddlers.

How are chores beneficial to your kids? They teach valuable lessons of teamwork, sharing the workload, and responsibility. Chores teach your children the tools and skills to help them be successful in life. Let’s dive into the details for why your kids should do chores.

How do chores teach discipline? A great way to teach kids discipline is to let them experience how their work adds value to the world around them. Empowering kids with that pride of a job well done is a fabulous way to teach self-discipline.

Benefits of sharing household chores with kids:

Empower kids to succeed by experiencing the value of their deeds

Facilitate physical development. Having chores from a young age helps to develop gross and fine motor skills and coordination.

Chores help kids feel they belong. Chores help kids feel like an important part of the family. It’s especially helpful when you and your other family members take notice and positively comment when children complete their tasks. Here’s a way to organize family chores with Trello.

Contribute to the home. Doing chores provides kids with ways to contribute to the household. As children feel like they’re participating in some way, they begin to develop and build pride. “I can dust the tables all by myself” is a powerful message for a 7-year-old.

Build self-esteem. Consistently giving chores to kids builds their sense of their own abilities. From cleaning up after themselves to making their beds and sweeping the floors, chores assigned by parents significantly contribute to children’s positive self-esteem.

Provide learning experiences. Kids learn something when they perform household tasks. Whether it’s why the chore needs to be done or how it’s carried out, knowledge will be gained and retained.

How do chores teach responsibility?

Teach kids responsibility. When a child is solely responsible for a job getting done in the home, he learns to take responsibility for that task. This is key to raising a responsible child. As they mature, children learn that people in the home depend on them to complete their chores correctly and in a timely fashion.

Introduce children to the world of work. Assigning chores in your home will be your children’s first introduction to working. One of the most important things you can do for your kids is to teach them about what it’s like to have a job and have people counting on them to carry it through. Plus, children will learn how to enjoy and look forward to working.

Children discover the value of cooperation. When large chores, like raking leaves, are shared by the whole family, kids see how important it is to cooperate with others.

  • For example, two people can rake the leaves and then help each other with bagging them. Then, a third family member can move the bags to the curb.
  • Taking part in these teaching moments impresses on your kids the value of working cheerfully with one another. Also, it instills the idea that in many instances, cooperation is vital to getting the job done.

Demonstrate the importance of taking care of personal items and one’s home. The best way to show a child how important it is to take care of his own property and the house is to assign chores.

Focus on the completion of the task, not the size of the chore. Kids learn to do chores starting with simple tasks. Teaching them to celebrate the successful completion of a task helps kids take ownership. Then as they grow and chores get progressively more difficult, kids have the motivation to complete them and take pride in their work.

Chore chart ideas – how to get kids to do chores

Here are some chore charts ideas that can help your kids do chores. Checking off their work and seeing their responsibilities visually is empowering and encouraging.

You can also come up with a reward system to keep kids motivated. It is very important not to use chores as a punishment, as we want to keep chores as a responsibility and not a discipline tool.

Giving chores to your kids will teach them crucial lessons about life, cooperation, and work. Commit today to consistently assign chores to your children and watch as they reap the benefits now and later.

Do your kids do chores? Why or why not? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
