Key Takeaways
- A clear theme ties everything together, from decorations and costumes to music and invitations, making the party feel cohesive and exciting.
- Age-appropriate activities keep kids engaged, whether it is messy crafts for little ones or trivia and games for older children.
- Snacks and décor do not have to be complicated. DIY touches and themed store-bought items can still create a festive, spooky vibe.
Just Spooky Enough
Holidays are a really great time for kids and parents to create memories and bond through unique activities and celebrations. Halloween is one of my favorites because it involves costumes, themes, and so many different activities to explore! Check out this guide for hosting a ghoul-tastic event that keeps parents and kids entertained without getting too spooky.
Themed Parties
A Halloween-specific theme provides everyone with a starting base for the event. Whether you choose a monster bash, superhero throwdown, or forest fairy festival, you’re getting an idea of what Halloween party decorations you need and giving other parents a starting point for their own prep. Everything from the Halloween balloons and party favors to the costumes and music should align with your theme.
Plan Child-Appropriate Activities
Your event may look very different depending on the age of the children attending. Toddlers may only be interested in messy crafting and munching on sweets, while older children would love to participate in a yarn ball toss or bobbing for apples. Here are a few activities within each age range to provide you with a few fabulous Halloween party ideas:
- Ages 3-7: Eyeball Relay Race, Guess What’s in the Box, Halloween Candy Hunt
- Ages 8-12: Build a Scarecrow, Apple Bobbing, Halloween Bingo, Pumpkin Bowling
- Ages 13 & Up: Halloween Charades, Puzzle Relay, Monster Movie Trivia Game
Some games are more competitive, while others are just about being gross or scary. Choose your games based on children’s ages and interests to keep everyone engaged and involved in your party theme.
Have a Set Start & End Time

Many parents like to take their kids trick-or-treating and get them home before bedtime, even on Halloween. You should decide how long your party will last before it starts and include the start and end times on your invitations. For children under eight, a two-hour party is more than enough. However, you may want to keep the door open for a sleepover if you’re hosting older children at your home. Kids will love sleeping among the giant Halloween inflatables and decor you leave up!
Create Catchy Invitations
Unique DIY Halloween decor supplies aren’t the only things you need for your big event. Whether digital or on paper, you should put extra thought into your invitations so they catch the eye and get people excited to attend. Make sure your invitations match the theme of your event and that you list all the appropriate details, including start and end times, costume requirements, game options, and other information. You can also include pre-party goodie bags with candy alternatives and trinkets.
Go All Out With Decorations
You don’t have to buy all your decorations! You can make some amazing Halloween special effects with simple household items. Consider transforming everyday items into Halloween decor, like sheets over balloons to create ghosts or cardboard cutouts in the window to make it look like there are scary monsters within. You can also amp up your decorations with basic LED lights. Simply repurpose objects you already have in new ways to ensure a spooky, creepy space!
If you have older children, you can make this part of the pre-party prep into a fun activity for everyone. Bond with your little ones when you ask them for their ideas and help them learn about following directions when you teach them how to set everything up.
Add Themed Music
No party is complete without the perfect playlist! You can play a variety of classic hits, like “Monster Mash,” or set up the soundtrack from your favorite movies. Whether you have the soundtrack from Hocus Pocus, Ghostbusters, or Coraline playing in the background, you’re adding a ton of unique ambience to your event.
Don’t let the party go silent! Make sure you have several hours of music on a single playlist to prevent any interruptions to the festivities.
Have Fun With Snacks

If you’re a DIY parent who loves to make things from scratch, you can have tons of fun with your party snacks. From banana ghosts and salted caramel popcorn balls to mummy-wrapped hot dogs and eyeballs made from grapes, there are plenty of kid-friendly treats you can make from scratch.
There are also plenty of ways to have fun with simple recipes or pre-bought snacks. Many brands have Halloween-specific releases to ensure you have a quick, easy way to feed everyone at your party. Some special items to look out for at the grocery store include spooky chicken nuggets shaped like pumpkins and bats, creepy fruit snacks that look like ghosts and bugs, and premade cookie dough stamped with Halloween themes and colors.

Are You Ready to Party?
Once your list is complete, it’s time to start welcoming guests! Just make sure you have a camera handy to capture the best moments of the party. Send parents photos of their families from the event so they can look back on their children’s costumes, unique character makeup, and family fun!
