Finding the right gifts can be hard, finding the right gifts for your coworkers can be even harder. You spend a majority of your working days with them, but that doesn’t mean it’s any easier to buy gifts for them. There are a lot of things to keep in mind when buying your coworkers gifts, from etiquette and professionalism to their needs and wants. Here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for gifts.
Dos and Don’ts
Do Remember To Stay Professional
You may be best friends with some of your coworkers, but at the end of the day, you’re still connected through work. That’s why it’s important to remain professional when picking out your coworker’s gift. Don’t buy anything that could give off the wrong impression or aren’t appropriate for the office environment.
Do Put Some Thought Into It
Of course, you don’t want to overthink your gifts for your coworkers. At the same time, you don’t want to end up giving them a generic gift that they won’t appreciate. Put the time and effort into figuring out what they like and want. If you need some help, ask around the office. Just make sure that word doesn’t get back to them!
Do Keep Inclusivity In Mind
When it comes to any gifts given in a professional setting, have inclusivity in mind when you’re buying anything. Keep any gifts gender-neutral, and try to avoid any holiday-specific gifts. You don’t want to leave anyone out when it comes to gift exchanges.
Don’t Spend Too Much Money
Any workplace gift exchange should have limits when it comes to spending. Set a max price range and stick to it. You don’t want to bring in something expensive and make everyone else’s gifts look insignificant in comparison.
Don’t Leave Anyone Out
Consider if you’re leaving anyone out when purchasing gifts. How would it make them feel if they found out you didn’t buy them a gift? If you’re buying a birthday gift for a coworker, try to do the same for all of your other coworkers so everyone can be included. Help build an environment of gratitude at your workplace.
Don’t Gift at Inappropriate Times
Remember to only give gifts when it’s appropriate. Birthdays and around holidays are the perfect time to do so. Avoid giving any gifts around performance reviews, as this may give off the wrong kind of message.
