Top 10 Posts of 2015

Top 10 Posts of 2015

Well, we’re now reaching the end of 2015, and so I wanted to take an overall review look-see at how my blog did this year. A great way to see what my wonderful readers want to see in 2016 is to see what performed the best (aka what you LOVED) in 2015. So without further babbling, let’s see what my top 10 posts were from 2015. 1. My post on Overnight Oatmeal. This one has gotten the most Pins as well. I’m still making and eating my overnight oatmeal, now I’m also sharing it with the little guy. 2. My […]

Lessons Learned Blogging in 2015

Lessons Learned Blogging in 2015

I’ve had this blog since 2004 (sheesh, right?) but I’ve taken quite a few blogging breaks, and only in the past couple of years have I come back to blogging more seriously, even if still as a hobby. I became a Mom and really dove back into blogging with documenting my pregnancy and then getting into the moms who blog community. I learned a lot during this past year of blogging so I thought I’d share some of my lessons learned. Blogging Lessons Learned in 2015 First impressions count, so take your blog appearance seriously. Once I started taking this blog seriously, […]

Review of How To Monetize A Small Blog by #LukeWeil

Review of How To Monetize A Small Blog by #LukeWeil

I received a copy of the book and compensation for my honest review. The opinions are my own. These days, monetizing your blog is the thing to do. It is definitely something I’ve started doing and am interested in learning more about. As a blogger, getting free stuff is not too difficult, because our reviews are influential and valuable. But blogging isn’t just about getting things for free. There are opportunities to turn a blog into a profitable venture, and I am very interested in making my blog a good side hustle. sounded like a great book to pick up to […]

HTML Tip: How to Create a Custom Style for Text Boxes

HTML Tip: How to Create a Custom Style for Text Boxes

In this post, I will show you two options for controlling the size and colors of a text box on your post. Example 1: Specify Blockquote Style Example 2: Add a Class to a DIV   Example 1: Specify Blockquote Style I like to use the blockquote feature to highlight special text or a writing prompt, and I have styled my blockquote accordingly. The reason I choose to use the blockquote to emphasize specific text, is it already indents and differentiates the text, allowing me to only need to add customization in the colors used. In the screenshot below, the area […]

How to create a Pinnable image using Fotor

How to create a Pinnable image using Fotor

Have you heard of Fotor’s graphic design tool. This tool requires flash player. I’ll try to keep this simple, ’cause we know a tutorial on how to make a pinnable image can get very detailed and involved very quickly. Click on “Get Started” on the main graphic design page, and you’ll be able to pick what type of image to create. We know that longer, larger images look best on Pinterest, so we want to pick the “Poster” option. Then you can pick an awesome template from the scrolling options on the left. I picked the one that says Antique […]

Do I need a rebrand? The history of my site name

Do I need a rebrand? The history of my site name

When I first got started with websites, my site was called Julie Cookie’s website. Cookie was my nickname in high school (well one of my many nicknames, since nicknaming was the cool thing to do), and since then most of my usernames have been juliecookies or some variation of that. I still have that as my personal email and most of my online presence usernames. Before I got a domain name and while I was hosted by various friends, I changed my site name to Julie’s Star (as in, this site is just one of the many sites on the web, like […]

How to Write the Perfect Blog Post [Infographic]

How to Write the Perfect Blog Post [Infographic]

I came across this lovely Infographic and decided to share it. It really does have some useful information. I really like how it breaks the tips down by category (i.e. post headline, post body, etc.). However, I do think I disagree with the post length point. I find if a post is too long, I fall into the “tl;dr” category and skim, or just go away. I want to read shorter, sweeter posts than long essays that make my eyes go crossed, especially when reading on my phone. Anyone else have this issue? Let me know what you think of […]

How to use Google Drive as an Editorial Calendar

How to use Google Drive as an Editorial Calendar

WordPress has a great plugin that shows your draft and scheduled posts on a calendar, and you can drag and drop as needed to move things around. This editorial calendar is incredibly useful. However, what about your list of ideas? I keep reading that creating a draft post for each idea you have isn’t the best practice. Well, I probably have 10-15 idea drafts just floating around my WordPress – and they’re not even legit drafts, just subject lines and a blank post. I decided to instead try to organize and plan my ideas elsewhere, instead of creating a draft […]

How to take criticism and apply it in a positive way

How to take criticism and apply it in a positive way

The other day I learned about Peek by UserTesting.com, a site where you can submit your own website and they will provide you with a recording of a live person attempting to use your site. How cool is that? They allow 3 free peeks per month, otherwise you need a paid subscription. So I figured I’ll give it a try with this blog. Well, the recording I got was completely disappointing. The person who “peeked” at my site clearly had no idea how a blog works. My most recent post at that time was about breast pumps, so she said […]

My Favorite WordPress Plugins

I really enjoy using the WordPress blogging platform – one reason being all the amazing plugins we can use to enhance our blogging experience.
