#Harvey update and love for my city Houston

#Harvey update and love for my city Houston

Nine trillion gallons. That’s how much rainfall Houston received on the first day. Twenty Seven (27!!!) trillion gallons in total over the six days. This past weekend, a horrendous storm named #Harvey landed as a Category 4 near Corpus Christi, Texas with a six-foot storm surge and caused so much devastation before it even proceeded to dump a tremendous amount of rain on Houston, Texas. Houston is very, very flat. The water collects faster than it can drain or run off, causing the disaster you have heard about on the news, or are living if you are a fellow Houstonian. […]

20 Quotes about Gratitude

20 Quotes about Gratitude

I love reflecting on the positive things in life and sharing my gratitude with you. That’s part of the mission of our Gratitude and Goals linky party, and it is very important to me. Today I wanted to share some fun and inspirational quotes about gratitude. Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some. – Charles Dickens   As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them. – John F. Kennedy   […]

A Day in the Life, 2016 edition

A Day in the Life, 2016 edition

I participated in this Day in the Life blog event last year and thought it would be interesting to participate again, to see how much things have changed. I remembered to record my day on Monday, March 21st. 6:30 Alarm, too cold and bed is cozy, so I snoozed. Baby is still asleep THANK GOODNESS! 6:45 OK guess I should get up. 37 degrees? In March? What gives? Get ready and find warmer clothes again. Heat up some breakfast and pour coffee. Thankfully the nanny already let the dogs out and fed them because the other parent came to […]

Should You Send Them a Holiday Card?

Should You Send Them a Holiday Card?

Do you follow the tradition of sending Holiday cards? I’ve been sending them to friends and family for years, but this is the first year we’ve done a formal photo card. The tradition is a bit curious; here are some facts: Americans send 1.6 billion holiday cards annually  (and women purchase approximately 80% of all greeting cards) [source] E-cards have become an environmentally friendly alternative to paper cards [source] Christmas cards originated in London, where Sir Henry Cole commissioned the first in 1843. [Source] Despite the separation of church and state, it’s customary for the President and First Lady to […]

13 Russian Superstitions I Grew Up With

13 Russian Superstitions I Grew Up With

Russians tend to have a lot of superstitions and are terrified of bad luck, and some of them are quite silly from an outsider’s perspective. My family is Russian, so I thought it would be fun to share some of the superstitions I grew up with. Spit 3 times “tfu tfu tfu”. If someone says something positive or complimentary, “spit” three times to avoid the evil eye. It is similar to knocking on wood. If you are not married, do not sit at a corner. Apparently sitting directly at a corner if you are unmarried means you will not marry […]

10 Things I Find Myself Saying Over and Over

10 Things I Find Myself Saying Over and Over

10 Things I find myself saying over & over I am so tired. As a new mom, I can’t even remember the last time I got 6 hours of sleep. I love you. I say it a lot, to my hubby, to my baby, to my parents. Shhhh Shhh Shhh. Please go to sleep. Yep, to my screaming or fussing little boy. Are you hungry? Do you want more? These are words I’m trying to teach the baby so he can eventually react and help us communicate. I love audio books. That’s the only format I’m reading books in right […]

A full plate means things get dropped

A full plate means things get dropped

So I recently learned that I drove my car for 13,000 miles since the last oil change. Oops. But it has only been about 4-5 months since the last oil change, so I really didn’t think about it. I’m used to getting extended oil changes and only needing to change it 2-3 times a year. But all the driving back and forth while moving and the extra driving to work and to see friends has apparently added up. I noticed something was wrong on my drive back to Houston from San Antonio. I was there for a conference, and then on […]

Book Events and Halloween

So, I’ve been neglecting thing at this blog quite a bit and I’m sorry about that. I’ve been so busy with posting on the book blog, and since I share personal stuff on facebook, I haven’t been posting here as much. I need to fix that. Feel free to poke me about it. So what have I been up to the last month or so? Well, I’ve done a lot of bookish stuff. A lot! I’ve been to some really amazing events and since I can’t really “reblog” them here, I will share the links to the posts. I really […]

Dusty Rose Files: On Wine

Dusty Rose Files: On Wine

Hello, my name is Dusty Rose, and I am a kitty wine-o-holic. Apparently. See, Momma has this bottle holder thinger that she keeps in the kitchen where she keeps these bottles of wine. And I’ve always wondered what was in there and why these bottles were sitting in that holder thinger. Well this past weekend Momma and the guy that lives with her slept in too long and I was just bored. And I was hyper. So hyper. The kind of crazy hyper only kitties can understand. Althouh the dog thing claims to be kitty hyper too, but I think […]

A Blog From the Dog

A Blog From the Dog

Woof. Hello there. Dixie here. You know, everyone’s favorite Springer. I’m sure you’ve heard of me. Momma’s lazy so I got to sneak on her lappy and do a post for her. I wonder if she’ll find out, and if she does, will she get mad? She probably doesn’t think I’m smart enough to use her lappy. She always calls me a dummy head. But I’m a smart dog! Anyway, this has been an interesting day. My humans slept a lot this morning, and it was quite annoying cause most days they get up early and let me out to […]
