Working Mom Breastfeeding Essentials #WBW2015

Working Mom Breastfeeding Essentials #WBW2015

This year’s World Breastfeeding Week topic is Breastfeeding and Work, Let’s Make it Work.  I thought I would share some thoughts as a breastfeeding working mom. Working Mom Breastfeeding Essentials Before returning to work Know your rights. Your workplace is required to provide a private space for mothers to pump as well as the break time to do so. Check out this tear sheet with details from the Fair Labor Standard Act. Visit your workplace prior to the end of your maternity leave and scope out the available space for expressing breast milk. Find out if your office has lactation […]

Things you do while Breastfeeding

Things you do while Breastfeeding

I’ve already shared my early breastfeeding journey, my challenges, and the enjoyable positive side. Since it is World Breastfeeding Awareness Week I thought I’d talk some more about the topic. The breastfeeding act usually takes place while sitting or reclining, and doesn’t allow for much multitasking of active to-do list items. However, there are still things one can do while breastfeeding. Here are some of the multi-tasking I’ve done while breastfeeding Baby H. Things you can do while breastfeeding. Eat. When Baby H was little and not so squirmy, I was able to nurse him cradle style in my lap […]

Baby H 9 Month Update

Baby H 9 Month Update

I can’t even believe that my little baby is 9 months old today! He is also 39 weeks old, so he has been out in this world longer now that he was inside of me. That is just surreal.  Both of us have grown so much over the past 9 months (obviously him more than me, but still). I wanted to take a moment and reflect on all the milestones reached. Baby H’s Milestones: He is nearly 22 pounds now! We have a 9-month check-up on Friday so we’ll find out the actual height/weight then. EDIT: at this appointment Baby […]

Tips for Taking a Road Trip with an Infant

Tips for Taking a Road Trip with an Infant

We went on a family road trip over the Fourth of July holiday weekend – the first road trip for Baby H. We visited family in Florida and Georgia, so it was a long drive. 800 miles each way with an 8-month-old is quite interesting, let me tell you. We prepared the best we could, and I wanted to share some tips and lessons learned. Tips for Road Trips with Infants 1. Plan your driving time wisely and include time for many stops along the way. On the way there we actually left in the evening and drove through the […]

Embracing how a baby changes your life

Embracing how a baby changes your life

Having a baby is absolutely life changing. I knew this and expected things to be different, but boy was I not prepared for the magnitude of it all. Here are just a few (some silly, some serious) ways a baby changes your life. How a baby changes your personal life: Suddenly you’re not the center of your own world. Another little being has taken over your attention and all your time. Activities and hobbies that were important to you before take a backseat or are forgotten altogether. Doing things you used to enjoy takes so much effort and planning that […]

Falling in love with the baby

Falling in love with the baby

I can’t pinpoint the exact moment I fell in love with my baby. I do know it wasn’t the exact moment he came out of me – because what I felt at that time (other than pain) was an “Oh Capital S what did I get myself into?” feeling. I felt disconnected during my pregnancy and didn’t really comprehend the magnitude of feelings I would feel for the little alien growing inside me. I’m glad I was told by other mothers not to expect to be in love with the baby right away, and that was okay and normal. I […]

Mid-Year Goals Check-in

Mid-Year Goals Check-in

At the start of the year, I shared my goals for 2015. These goals fall into categories of Life, Home, Financial, Body, and Mind. I thought it would be good to do a mid-year check-in. Life Find Balance. Find balance between family and work and friends and hobbies. Check-in: I’m managing balancing work and family quite well, but not so well with the friends and hobbies. The blogs I’m managing better than expected, but I haven’t read any books at home or gone to book club meetings, and I so rarely see my friends anymore. Le sigh. Make time for myself and […]

Silly Baby Loves His Playpen

Silly Baby Loves His Playpen

Baby H started crawling recently, and even pulling up to standing the other day, so now a lot more of the house is accessible to him. It is so amazing to watch him wiggle around a room, but it also is dangerous. It isn’t possible to 100% baby proof everything since even the coffee table (which happens to be where we eat, in front of the TV) can hurt him if he falls on it. He started getting bored in his pack & play since it really didn’t give him much room to move, so we decided to get a […]

Our Breastfeeding Challenges

Our Breastfeeding Challenges

I’ve shared our early breastfeeding journey and my favorite things about breastfeeding for Baby H’s first 6 months. I think it also makes sense to share our current and ongoing struggles. I absolutely LOVE the post “To The Mom Who Didn’t Breastfeed” on Scary Mommy because there’s so much truth to that post. I love this part: Breastfeeding is about more than the milk. It’s about feeding your baby against your body, the two of you gazing at each other in wonder. It is connection. It is touch. It is two souls who spent ages looking for one another and […]

Why you won’t see photos of my baby on this blog

Why you won’t see photos of my baby on this blog

The more I get into blogging, especially “mommy” blogging, the more I see something that terrifies me. Okay, maybe terrifies isn’t the right word, but this activity makes me very uncomfortable, to say the least. I’m talking about bloggers sharing large, detailed photographs of their children on their blogs.  Does anyone else see the dangers in this? Aren’t we warned against posting our vacation schedules on social media to avoid inviting criminals to break into our houses when they know we are away? Haven’t we been told that once something is posted online, it is there forever?   As a […]
