Practicing Self-Care in a New Way, an Essential Oils Review

Posted February 27, 2017 by Julie in Health, Reviews / 3 Comments

2017 appears to have a motto for everyone: practice self-care!

Have you noticed this as well? More than ever before, self-care ideas and encouragement is everywhere as well as reminders that we moms need to remember ourselves, too.

I love this, and I’m jumping on that bandwagon as well. I really let 2016 get me down and didn’t take good care of myself. After my most recent bug which resulted in breathing issues and a fun trip to the doctor complete with a nebulizer breathing treatment, I realized just how much my own health matters.

Yes, I focus all my energy on that child of mine and give all I can at work. But what is left for me? No more. It is time for me, too.

How I’m practicing self-care in a new way

I mentioned already how I’m a mom in survival mode, and this kiddo and I are just doing our best (and sometimes he gives me his worst) day-to-day.

When the stress of my daily life gets too much, and my neck and shoulders feel the tension, I use an herbal heating pad on my shoulders. The warmth and lavender scents do wonders for relaxation.

It looks like this in case you’re wondering:

I just warm it up in the microwave and let my shoulders relax.

So, knowing that relaxing fragrances help me out, I decided to try a new method of self-care.

Trying out Essential Oils

**Thanks to Chrislie Essential Oils for providing this lovely set of oils for my review.

Check them out, aren’t they gorgeous?

Chrislie Essential Oils Set

Since I’m brand new to essential oils, I wanted to make sure I knew what each one is supposed to do. I don’t know how they work, why they work, or if they work, so I thought I would try them out myself.

Here is what the essential oils in this 9-piece set are responsible for:

  • Clary Sage: alleviate menstrual discomfort, support hormonal balance, and ease insomnia.
  • Peppermint: improve mental focus, lessen headaches, boost energy, antimicrobial properties.
  • Cassia: antidepressant properties, ease nausea, and boost circulation.
  • Jasmine: alleviate depression, good night’s sleep
  • Ylang Ylang: sharpen memory and focus.
  • Bergamot: reduce anxiety and stress, inspire a relaxed and tranquil mood.
  • Frankincense: relieving stress, anxiety and negative emotions, boost the immune system and balance hormones.
  • Cinnamon Bark:  encourage self-confidence and self-acceptance, helping to let go of negativity.
  • Sandalwood: improve memory and concentration, perfect for the office or workspace.

Chrislie Essential Oil Review

I already mentioned that I find beautiful fragrances relaxing and enjoyable. These oils smell wonderful. They are not so strong and medicinal smelling that I get a migraine (which, to be honest, was a concern I had before I tried them), but are more subtle and nose-friendly. I like to put them on like a perfume (wrists, behind the years, neck), and breathe in the wonderful floral and sweet scents.

Here are the oils I have been using on a regular basis during the past couple of weeks since I received my essential oil set.

Essential Oils used in the Morning

I have started using Peppermint and Frankincense in the morning to help boost my immune system. Like I said, I have not been taking good care of myself, and have been ill too many times this season already. I can’t say what their effect has been so far, but any boost I can get will be great.

Essential Oils used at Work

I have taken Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang to work, and they sit next to my monitor. When I get to work in the morning, I apply a few drops of each to my skin and let their aroma get me going.

What I have noticed is I am much more awake and alert during the day.  No more 3 PM slump! Sometimes I don’t even realize how much time has passed, which is great! I’m definitely going to continue using these two in the office.

Essential Oils used before Bedtime

Momsomnia is a real thing. It is so hard to turn off the brain and relax, and night wakings (mine, and my toddler’s) keep me from getting a good night’s sleep.

When I remember to apply Jasmine before bed, I have noticed that I sleep deep, and I sleep hard.

I also apply Bergamot before I go bed as well because I need help in the relaxing department. Both of these oils are so lovely and help me think about happy, positive things before drifting off to sleep.

  1. What a beautiful set of oils. I only have a few so far but I want to build up my collection. I agree after 2016 I guess people are a little worn out and focusing more on self care in 2017! LOL.
